TranscriptionCopy Letter of 5th August; Hd. Qrs. [Headquarters] Dept. [Department] of the South In the Field; Engineers Office-Morris Island S.C. [South Carolina]; Aug. [August] 5th 1863; To the Assistant in charge U.S. Coast Survey Office; Washington D.C.; Sir; I have to ask your pardon for not having before acknowledged the receipt of two sets of Maps of Charleston Harbor and a new one of this Coast. They came duly and have been [of?] of the greatest servce to us. Your Charts of this coast are invaluable to us. Their great amount of detail and extreme accuracy leaves nothing to be desired in a Military map. On manuscript maps enlarged from your charts I can almost plan the details of our offensive and defensive works. Little high tide-marsh-[????] are [????] no larger than a tent floor, which apparently could never posess the least interest or value on a Map have proven
