End of Second battle of Fort Wagner.
TranscriptionSept. [September] 7, 1863; At about 2 A.M. this day a deserter from Wagner reported the fort evacuated, no one being left save a small party to fire the magazines. Scouts were sent in who verified his statement and our forces at once took possession of the Fort. Before mng. [morning?] Battery Gregg was also in our possession thus giving us the entire possession of Morris Island. A boat expedition in the direction of Gregg captured about 80 prisoners making their escape therefrom. All the other rebel troops made their escape.
