TranscriptionThursday August 20th 1863; The bombardment recommenced early this morning, our land batteries did good execution, Fort Sumter was struck by our gunners twice out of every five shots, the fleet remained inactive most of the day. I may say that the crumbling walls of Sumter cannot stand very much longer, the iron [force?] that is constantly directed against it. This evg. [evening] about 8 o'c just as [????], the Rebels opened a very long gun from James Island, and directed most of its fire upon the Left of the Line. However there was not much injury done. It was supposed to be one of the guns taken from the [????]. The 300 pdr. Parott commenced firing today.
