Report by Crane on the amount of Rebel firing on working parties in front of Fort Wagner. Crane writes that the fire upon the fatigue parties was sometimes more, at other times less.
Transcription[Letter] Folly Island Dec [December] 15th 1863; An account of firing upon working parties in front of Wagner. Whenever a working party showed themselves, then the rebels opened fire at the rate of one shot per minute. When the Calcium was thrown on Wagner then the rebels fired at the rate of thirty shots per hour. On the night of the charge made by the 24th Mass [Massachusetts] the rebels fired at the rate 50 shots per hour for a short time and then resumed their usual fire. One night the light was thrown on to Wagner when the rebels fired constantly till midnight at the rate of 40 Shots per hour. When the fire exceeded this (as it did often for a short time) the rate was one per minute. To the best of my knowledge on the subject (that is heavy firing on tally according to memorandum) the rebels fired 62 shots in two hours. The above is as accurate an average of the fire upon the fatigue parties as I can arrive at, it was sometimes more at other times less,
