TranscriptionDepartment of the South; Head Quarters in the Field; Engineers Office Morris Island August 3rd 1863; General; I feel it my duty as Asst. [Assistant] Engineer in charge of the advanced works on the Right when I have fatigue parties constantly exposed to state that last night (August 2nd 1863) no guard or picket was ahead on the left flank of the line i.e. by the boom in the creek, until about 9 o'c. P.M. nor could I find any Infantry soldiers belonging to the picket within 150 yards of this point although there were some Artillery within 75 yards, i.e. in the Coehorn Battery. I respectfully suggest that an advanced picket post be kept at the creek by the boom Day [underlined] and Night [underlined]. Also that a strong intermediate post (of 20 men or more) be constantly kept in the Coehorn Mortar Battery. A traverse against Johnson's
