TranscriptionWednesday August 26th 1863; The enemy opened a heavy fire upon the Right today. The Sap was discontinued at 11 o'c A.M. At about 3 o'c P.M. our batteries opened on Fort Wagner, and at 6 1/2 o'c. the 24th Regt. [Regiment] [????] charged the ridge, under cover of our [????], when after a brush of about 10 minutes the enemy surrendered, we captured about [????] prisoners, the remaining portion fled. [????] are now in full possession of the disputed ground, the enemy are now enclosed within the fort. Before the [????] left, they stripped the body of a negro, and fastened it to a torpedo, in order that any person going to carry him off should be blown up. (this report of the negro is not correct see 27th [????]).
