TranscriptionThursday Sept. [September] 3rd 1863; Capt. [Captain] Jos. [Joseph] Walker was on duty from 7 o'c P.M. Sept. [September] 2 to 4 o'c A.M. Sept. [September] 3rd. He started the sap in the new direction (70 degrees to the old approach) constructing 14 ft. [feet] of it. He also raised the fascine parapet on the beach three fascines high. Lieut. [Lieutenant] Chas. [Charles] B. Parsons was on duty from 3 o'c A.M. to 11 o'c A.M. Sept. [September] 3rd. He extended the sap slowly, owing to the enemy's fire. Widened the trench and strengthened the parapet from the 5th Parallel forward. Cap. [Captain] John L. Suess was on duty from 11 o'c A.M. to 7 o'c P.M. Sept. [September] 3rd. He extended the sap as commenced by Capt. [Captain] Walker about 18 ft. [feet]. Also laid sand-bag banquets and revetments in the most of this sap. At 4 P.M. Capt. [Captain] Suess was disabled by a rifle shot and obliged to leave. Lieut. [Lieutenant] J. S. Baldwin was on duty from 8 o'c A.M. to 4 o'c P.M. Sept. [September] 3rd. He strengthened parapet of approaches to the 4th Parallel. Also laid mortar platforms in the 5th Parallel.
