TranscriptionJuly 16th, 17th, and 18th. Continued work on Batteries O'Rorke and Hays and on the morning of the 18th completed them. All the Left Batteries were half sunken. Sand bag revetting was used throughout. The fifteen pieces first ordered were ready in 60 hours from the time of breaking ground. About [540?] days work were expended. The work was mostly done in the night. The following pieces were in position on the morning of the 18th. In the Left Batteries Battery Hayes nine 30 pounder and four 20 pounder Parrott Rifles. Battery O'Rorke five 10 inch siege mortars. On the right are ten siege mortars and fourteen rifled guns. Total amount of ordnance in position forty two pieces, twenty seven being rifles and field guns and fifteen siege mortars. At 10 A.M. July 18th these batteries opened a bombardment upon Fort Wagner which was continued until dusk, and followed by an unsuccessful assault. During the night an obstacle consisting of inclined palisading was extended across Morris Island at a distance of 225 yards in advance of the First Parallel and the First Parallel was extended westward about 75 yards by a rifle trench delivering its fire upon the obstacle.
