Second Battle of Fort Wagner.
TranscriptionSaturday July 18th; All the Batteries on Right and Left (See Order) were ready and opened fire [about?] on Wagner. At night assault was made and we were repulsed. Rifle trench was extended to left of 1st parallel toward Creek for Defense. Lt. [Lieutenant] Maguire and 50 Engineers. Capt. [Captain] Graef was in first parallel to make repairs with 40 Engrs. [Engineers]. Lt. [Lieutenant] Wilson and Capt. [Captain] Suess with 20 Engrs. [Engineers] and 50 soldiers (negroes) put in [????] obsticles [obstacles] over 225 yds [yards] in [advance?] of 2nd obstacle this night after the Assault; 140 Infantry were employed.
