Report by Brooks on General Gillmore and Volunteer Engineers. Brooks writes that Gillmore makes use of, and acknowledges, the value of the uses of Volunteer Engineers in this war, and discusses operations that the engineers have been employed in.
Transcription2; to [????] by civilians are the best military maps of the war. Today civil assistants for the C. S. offices [????] in the Military everything as [????]. Military casualties of [fire?] [????] is the subject of [????]. The question of the slight of materials scarcely [????]. Locations [????] of Field and Siege Works [nearby?] involves principles difficult for civil works, but these principles are few easily comprehended and applied. The subject of military roads and bridges for field operatives is all employed in the Civil branch of the [????] part of the subject as there considered. Capt. [Captain] Gillmore as Chief Engineer of Genl. [General] [Sherman's?] Expedition Corps. found in that [????] the 1st Regt. [Regiment] of N. Y. [New York] Vol. [Volunteer] Engr [Engineers] who had been accepted by the President for Engineer duty. The enlisted men of that regiment were mostly [????], their officers were more or less acquainted with [????] [branch?] after [????], and many of them good Topographers. Genl. [General] Gillmore made use of this regiment in all the [????] engineer [operations?]. [????] under his direction.
