TranscriptionSaturday Sept. [September] 5th 1863; Lieut. [Lieutenant] M. Adams was on duty from 12 o'c midnight till 8 o'c A.M. Sept. [September] 5th. He finished covering the Mortar Magazine in 5th Parallel. Also widened trench in approach to the 5th Parallel. Lt. [Lieutenant] H. Farrand was on duty from 8 o'c A.M. to 4 o'c P.M. He widened trenches in the 5th Parallel. Carried materials for the sap to the front. Continued the sap. Capt. [Captain] Pratt was on duty from 4 o'c P. M. to 12 o'c midnight. He carried fascines from 2nd Parallel to front. Built 40 ft. of parapet and moved Requa Battery. Capt. [Captain] Jos. [Joseph] Walker was on duty from 11 o'c A.M. to 11 o'c P.M. Sap advanced from left of short parallel between sap roller and marsh to the beach abreast of the ditch of Fort Wagner a distance of 178 paces. A boat expedition for the capture of Gregg failed owing to the navy picket firing upon a boat leaving Morris Island for Charleston and their discovering the expedition and preventing a surprise. Another 200 pdr gun burst in Capt. [Captain] Strahan's battery on the right after firing [blank] rounds.
