TranscriptionTuesday Sept. [September] 1st, 1863; Two of the Monitors lay off Sullivans Island, but in a few hours drew off, during the day both sides were quiet. At 6 o'clock our side opened the ball, by firing a well directed shot into Fort Wagner, which sent the sand flying, shortly after, forts Johnson, Gregg, Wagner, and the batteries on James Island opened fire, the heavy cannonade was kept up without intermission for the entire night, all was quiet at 7 o'c next morning.
