Transcription[Letter, continued] swivel not needed on this service (see Sketch). This plan would slightly weaken the bayonet which is of little consequence as the [????] effect is about all that is expected from it- is a breech loading [????] and would according to my experience interfere but little with [????] delivery of this fire. I would be glad to see a Spencer Rifle having this additional arrangement. I have requested Gen. [General] Ripley Chief of Ordnance to send 300 Spencer Rifles with [700?] rounds of ammunition for each, to Gen. [General] Gillmore's Department to be used on Boat-Service. This service will I think be the best test that any [????] has been subject to during this war. If there is any means of giving the metal greater protection against the action of sea water then this [????] use in this Army, please [????] one. If you have any printed instructions concerning their use and care of their Rifles I would thank you for their copies. I would like to know what varieties of cartridges you make as to [gravity?] of [powder?] and what is the greatest amount that your present Rifle can use. A letter will reach me here my Hd. Qtr. [Headquarters] in N. Y. [New York] is at [D. Van Nostrand?] [????] Very Respectfully; Your [????]; T. B. Brooks; Major A. D. C.
