TranscriptionSunday August 23rd 1863; Siege work Day this morning; Capt. [Captain] Suess relieved Lieut. [Lieutenant] Wilcken at 3 o'c A.M. and came off duty at 11 o'c A.M.; Capt. [Captain] Suess went to work forming a flanking trench, to extend to the marsh. At daylight, the enemy opened an artillery fire from Fort Wagner, against the work, he drew off his men, and employed them at repairs in the trenches.; Detail 12 Engrs. [Engineers] and 40 Infantry; Lieut. [Lieutenant] Parsons relieved Capt. [Captain] Suess, at 11 o'c A.M. and continued the Sap, the principal [principle] work done being strengthening the trenches, forming banquet-threads, andc [etc.]. He also had a detail commencing a Barbette battery; Detail 10 Engrs. [Engineers] and 45 Infantry; Material Used Sand Bags; Lieut. [Lieutenant] Baldwin went upon duty at 8 o'c A.M. to 4 o'c P.M.; 1st. Repairs on flooring of Crib work; 2nd. Bracing Bombproof.
