TranscriptionFriday August 21st 1863; Siege work Day this morning; Capt. [Captain] Walker relieved Lieut. [Lieutenant] Parsons on duty in the Sap, at 3 1/2 o'c A.M. this day, the enemy fired a good deal of grape and canister shot, as soon as the fire ceased, gabions were placed in advance of the Sap Roller, in order to prevent the enemy's sharpshooters firing into the trench from the rear. At 9 o'c an artillery fire was opened upon the head of our Sap from Fort Wagner. At 11 1/2 o'c Capt. [Captain] Walker was relieved by Lt. [Lieutenant] Wilken, about 60 feet of Sap was accomplished. Lieut. [Lieutenant] Wilcken continued the Sap at 11 1/2, however the enemy's Sharpshooters succeeded in getting to his rear, and wounded an officer in the Sap. However the Sappers, covered themselves from the fire, by means of gabions, soon after Fort Wagner opened with grape and canister, which made it impossible to continue the Sap, the men being as much exposed to the fire from our forces as that of the enemy. They had to fall back to the 2nd parallel at 2 1/2 P.M.; Detail 12 Engrs. [Engineers]
