Transcription[Letter] Hilton Head, S. C. [South Carolina] Sept. [September] 14th 1863; Major T. B. Brooks; Asst. [Assistant] Engineer to; Brig. [Brigadier] Gen. [General] Q. A. Gilmore; Dear Sir; I found the wounded, Major, you referred to, on board Steamer Cosmopolitan and from the few moments conversation I had with him, just before the Steamer leaving for Morris Island, I gathered these few facts, which are not as satisfactory as I wished. He states that he does not know the precise time that Wagner was commenced in construction, but since the war, and completed about the time we arrived before Morris Island. The Chief Engineer in its construction was Langdon [Chene?] (pronounced so) a Captain of Engineers, and who was killed by the first shell thrown into Wagner. The next Engineer (I forgot his name) to him in rank was also killed shortly after, while writing at a table in one of the bomb proofs, by the hitting of a Shell near him.
