Letter to Brooks from Suess in response to eleven questions sent to Suess by Brooks previously. Questions were in relation to rebel firing, how much work was done at night, and how much of the work was shovelling dirt. Suess also compared work done by soldiers during the siege to work done by citizens in civil life.
Transcription[Letter, continued] 15 to 20 Cub. ft. per hour per head, while exposed to quite a lively fire from Ft. Wagner, during about 6 working hours. Qu. [Question] IV. What part of the work done was simply shovelling dirt? A. [Answer] In this category would fall all the covering with earth of the Bat. [Batteries] and Magazines and splinter-proofs, also the larger part of the approaches and the smaller part of the parallels forward of the 2d [second] parallel. I do not know whether my replying will correspond with what you desire to establish.
