[Commanding] Department; Sir; In order to express more definitely the great inconvenience and extra expense we are incurring in our Engineering operations in the 2nd Parallel for want of lumber I have the honor to state; 1st. Last night 600 sand bags worth I suppose over 200 [dollars?] were used for revetting where 1000 feet [????] of Boards would have answered better; 2nd. The two large magazines in the 2nd Parallel are neither of them [floored?] for the want of lumber, although one is now receiving powder; 3rd. Valuable lives are being daily risked for the want of lumber to build Splinter Proofs; Very Respectfully Your Obdt [Obedient] Servt [Servant]; T.B. Brooks; Capt. [Captain] and Asst. [Assistant] Engineer
