Letter to Brooks from Suess recommending to connect all the ends of saps and trenches abutting on the beach by a trench, which would be furnished with a double parapet. This is because of increased apprehension of a flanking attack upon the right by way of the beach. Suess writes that he thinks the work could be performed at night.
Transcription[Letter] Morris Island S. C. [South Carolina] August 28th 1863; Capt. [Captain] T. B. Brooks, Asst. [Assistant] Eng. [Engineer]; Sir; In consideration of the proximity of Ft. [Fort] Wagner to our advanced lines, the apprehension of a flanking attack upon our right by way of the beach, at low tide at least, is fast increasing. I would therefore suggest to connect all the ends of saps and trenches abutting on the beach by a trench running close and parallel to the edge of the up-land bordering said beach, and furnished with a double parapet. The right-hand parapet next to the beach might simply consist of a row of gabions filled with earth and provided with a banquet for defence [defense] by infantry against surprises from the beach. On the left hand side there should be a more substantial parapet to guard against shells from James Island and artillery fire from Ft. [Fort] Wagner. The trench should be sufficiently [illegible] to allow the passage of teams, if so desired, with turn-outs. Strong [illegible]
