TranscriptionSaturday August 22nd 1863; Sent up a flag of truce from Hd. Qrs. [Headquarters] to the enemy this morning. Shortly after the bombardment commenced, the Sand batteries doing [great?] execution, the Navy, comprising the Ironsides and 5 Monitors, went up quite close to Sullivans Island, in order to engage Fort Moultrie, but after a few ineffective shots, the Monitors retired. However the Ironsides kept the enemy in check, and fired until about noon when she drew off. A flag of truce boat came down from Charleston about 6 o'c P.M. and steamed out to the fleet, which caused a great delay to our operations. This day, the 300 pdr. was fixed and made ready for action; two of the engineers having cut the bore and arranged it. There were some very good shots fired, most of which did good execution on Fort Sumter.; Mem. [Memoranda?] a. The 300 pdr. burst at 10 A.M. Aug. [August] 21. Repairs commenced at 5 P.M. same day and at 3 P.M. 22nd the gun was ready for use. It was not fired however until the 23rd.
