Letter to Brooks from Suess regarding the commencement of sapping operations. Suess writes that Capt. Walker has serious misgivings about the effectiveness of the fall sap, and that Capt. Walker proposes a different method of sapping, which was first used by the Turks in the 17th century.
Transcription[Letter, continued] and penetrating minds. It is much more natural to presume that the present mode of sapping offers the highest advantages attainable under the circumstances. I think that there there are but very few affairs in the Dept's of the South, who have had considerable practical experience in actual sieges. To deviate therefore from a course of sapping, which has been tested and found effective in hundreds of sieges, to adopt a method, which was first tried over 200 years ago and which, while it may afford comparative safety promises but [????] progress would [????] be advisable. At any rate I believe it would be detrimental to the best interest and efficiency of the N. Y. [New York] Vol. [Volunteer] Engrs. [Engineers] Reg. [Regiment], to neglect the practical instruction of its enlisted men in the school of the sap on account of sanguine expectations of the practical value of the plan above referred to. Respectfully; Your obed. [obedient] serv. [servant]; John L. Suess; Capt. [Captain] N. Y. [New York] Vol. [Volunteer] Engrs. [Engineers]
